1) The particles bounced off one another. The particles also changed shape frequently.

2) One method is to heat the material up and then rapidly cool it. This will not allow the particles time to form large masses. Another method is to continually agitate or stir the material as it cools to keep the large particles from forming.

1) Grains are small crystals that make a polycrystalline solid. Grain Boundaries are places where two or more grains interface with one another. Decreasing grain size increases strength and toughness.

2) Using the Czochralski Growth method. High-purity, semiconductor-grade silicon is melted in a container. A precisely oriented rod-mounted seed crystal is dipped into the molten silicon. The seed crystal's rod is slowly pulled upwards and rotated simultaneously.

1)  “MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization), a laser-based soft ionization method has proven to be one of the most successful ionization methods for mass spectrometric analysis and investigation of large molecules.[1,2] In addition analysis of post source decay (decay of proteins following the ionization) in many cases allows rapid sequencing of proteins. Thus MALDI has gained a crucial importance for protein analysis.
